INSL-X Max Block™ (formerly INSL-X Block Out®) is the next generation of water-based stain-blocking primers, engineered to seal difficult stains, lock in tannin bleed, and provide exceptional adhesion on both interior and exterior surfaces. Developed through years of testing across multiple substrates and environmental conditions, Max Block delivers stain-blocking performance that rivals traditional solvent-based primers while offering a low-VOC, water-based formula.
Max Block effectively seals tannin-rich woods such as cedar and redwood, helping prevent discoloration and bleed-through in finish coats. It also blocks many common household stains and odors including water stains, smoke damage, nicotine, and other difficult discolorations.
Fast drying and easy to use, Max Block can be top coated in as little as one hour, helping painters complete projects faster without sacrificing performance.

Why Max Block Replaced Block Out®

COVERAGE: 300 – 400 Sq. Ft. per gallon
DRY TIMES:
- To Touch: 30 Minutes
- To Recoat: 1 hour
SURFACE PREPARATION: Surfaces to be painted must be clean, dry, and free of dirt, dust, grease, oil, soap, wax, scaling paint, water soluble materials and mildew. Remove any peeling or scaling paint and sand these areas to feather edges smooth with adjacent surfaces. Glossy areas should be dulled. Drywall surfaces must be free of sanding dust. Spot prime before and after filling nail holes, cracks, and other surface imperfections.
New plaster or masonry surfaces must be allowed to cure (30 days) before applying base coat. Cured plaster should be hard, have a slight sheen and maximum pH of 10; soft, porous or powdery plaster indicates improper cure. Knife off any protrusions and prime plaster before and after applying patching compound. Remove any powder or loose particles.
APPLICATION: Stir product with a circular, lifting motion before you begin to paint. Max Block™ Water-Based Stain Blocking Primer may be applied by brush, roller, or spray, at a rate of application not to exceed 400 square feet per gallon. Surface texture and porosity will affect actual yield. For best brush application results, use a quality synthetic filament brush. For roller application use a 3/8” nap cover for smooth surfaces, a 1/2“ nap cover for semi-rough surfaces, and a 3/4” nap cover for rough surfaces. Apply at full strength for maximum stain blocking and sealing properties. Do not tint, thin or add any other paints or solvents.
Max Block™ seals the stain and prevents it from bleeding through into the topcoat. In typical usage, difficult stains may not appear fully covered and sealed by the primer and the first finish coat. The second finish coat should provide complete coverage of the stained area. Two coats of primer may be required on severe stains. For best results, top-coat with a latex or oil-alkyd finish in the same day.

Primer
This primer was not as thick as I thought it would be. Thus, the primer coat did not cover as well as I thought it should. I used one coat and the top coat adhered well. I think the product is fine, but wish it was slightly thicker. I would buy it again because I do not think the primer coat needs to be thick to allow the top coat to adhere.
