Rust Destroyer by Advanced Protective Products is a patented rust-converting coating and universal metal primer engineered to stop corrosion at the source and protect metal surfaces in one simple step. Unlike conventional primers or inhibitors that only slow corrosion, Rust Destroyer chemically converts active rust into a passive, stable form while forming a tough, adherent primer layer that topcoats can bond to. It can be applied directly over rusted metal, bare metal, previously painted surfaces, and galvanized substrates — eliminating the need for sandblasting or removing rust down to bare metal.
Whether used on rusted steel, aluminum, galvanized steel, tin, or core-tan metals, Rust Destroyer offers superior adhesion and corrosion protection and serves as a reliable base for subsequent coatings. Ideal for both industrial applications and maintenance projects, this rust-converting primer simplifies rust treatment and extends the life of coatings and structures.
FEATURES & BENEFITS
- Rust conversion + priming in one coat — converts active rust to a stable primer surface.
- Applies directly over rusted and bare metal — no sandblasting, scraping, or sanding required.
- Universal compatibility — works on steel, galvanized, aluminum, tin, previously painted surfaces, glossy surfaces without sanding, and more.
- Excellent topcoat adhesion — provides a strong base for future coatings.
- Outstanding corrosion protection — reduces oxygen and moisture access, inhibiting further rusting.
- Versatile use — suitable for structural steel, machinery, fencing, equipment, and more.
- Minimize maintenance by maximizing rust conversion, and metal protection.
- EASY to use, simply remove loose or scaling particles, grease or dirt, and the surface is ready for the rust destroying primer.
- Stops rust in severe conditions.
- Outperforms all other paints in comparative tests.
- Has been working in industrial, institutional, and commercial environments since 1982.Works under a variety of finishes.
- Works over a variety of finishes.
- Formulated for compatibility and sustained adherence to bridge paints that meet Federal and State specifications.
TYPICAL APPLICATIONS
- Rust-damaged metal structures and equipment
- Bridges, railings, metal siding, and beams
- Industrial machinery and fabrication
- Agricultural equipment and vehicles
- Marine hardware and dock components
COVERAGE: 300 square feet per gallon with a 3 mil (0.003 inches) dry film thickness, depending on the roughness and porosity of the surface, and method of application.
DRY TIMES:
- To touch: 6 hours maximum to touch, at 25°C (77°F) and 50% humidity with a 3 mil (0.003 inches) dry film thickness.
- To topcoat: 24 to 72 hours, depending on environmental conditions.
- When using topcoats containing aliphatic solvents such as mineral spirits, allow RUST DESTROYER to cure for 24 hours.
- When using top coats containing Aromatic solvents, Esters or Ketones or allow 72 hours to cure before top coating.
- When using latex topcoats allow 72 hours to cure before top coating.
- In lower temperature or higher humidity allow 36 hours to cure before top coating.
- Always spot test a small area for proper cure time.
APPLICATION: Brush, roll, aerosol, spray conventional or airless. When using spray equipment, use a 17- tip opening. DO NOT THIN! For best results apply at temperatures above 10°C (50°F) and humidity below 90%. Colder temperatures or very humid weather may extend cure time.
SALT SPRAY RESISTANCE: 300 hours as per ASTM B 117, with a 3 mil (0.003 inches) dry film thickness
ACCELERATED WEATHERING: 300 hours as per ASTM B 117, with a 3 mil (0.003 inches) dry film thickness. 500 hours as per ASTME 42, with various topcoats.
ADHESION TEST: 25 square cross hatch test; no loss in inter-coat adhesion nor in overall adhesion to the rusted surface after 300 hours of salt spray ASTM B 117, and 500 hours of accelerated weathering ASTME 42 using top coats of solvent base epoxy, 2 component polyurethanes, or exterior alkyd enamels.
X-RAY DIFFRACTION: Product changes from active to passive stage
FLEXIBILITY: No cracking when bent over 1/4" mandrel through 180°
