Modern Masters Exterior Dead Flat Varnish is a premium quality, 100% acrylic, non-yellowing, water base varnish formulated to have the optimum level of clarity with the least amount of sheen. It is water resistant and abrasion resistant and offers protection for faux finishes and decorative painted surfaces. Exterior Dead Flat Varnish will remove undesirable variations in sheen, created by using semi-gloss base coats with Decorative Glazes and allows the finish to maintain that aged effect. Not recommended for use over Modern Masters Metallic Paint Collection™ or Metal Effects® Reactive Paints.

  • Water Base, 100% Acrylic
  • Non-Yellowing
  • Water and Abrasion Resistant
  • Brush, Roll or Spray apply

Surface Preparation – The faux finish or decorative painted surface must be fully cured prior to application (approximately 24 hours). If applying over porous surfaces, (such as stone or plaster finishes) dilute the Dead Flat Varnish 10% with water and apply in thin coats until the surface is sealed. Note: Not intended for use over oil base finishes.

Application – Exterior Dead Flat Varnish can be applied by brush, roller or spray equipment. Do not apply when air and surface temperature are below 50ºF (10ºC) or high humidity conditions exist. Optimal application conditions are 60ºF-80ºF (16ºC-27ºC) and 30%-60% relative humidity. For most applications thinning is unnecessary. Stir thoroughly before use. Do Not Shake.

  • Brushing: Use a high-quality synthetic bristle brush.
  • Rolling: Use a high-quality, soft short nap roller.
  • Spraying: Use a HVLP gun, conventional cup gun or airless spray system. If thinning is necessary, add up to 10% (3fl. oz./88.5 ml) of water per quart/946 ml of Exterior Dead Flat Varnish. For best results and maximum protection, a minimum of 2 coats is recommended.

Dry Times – Dry to touch in 30 minutes. Recoat time is approximately two hours. Full cure time is 12 hours. Note: Thicker film, temperature below 60ºF (16ºC) and relative humidity above 50% may cause slower dry times.

Coverage – Approximately 350 to 450 sq. ft./Gal., 31.5-40.5m²/3.78 L.

Clean Up – Clean tools, brushes and equipment with warm, soapy water immediately after use. Promptly wipe up spills and splatters with a damp cloth.
