SURFACE PREPARATION: Surface to be painted must be clean and free of dirt, chalk, wax, grease, rust or flaking paint. Dirt and chalk should be removed by power washing or scrubbing with warm soapy water and thoroughly rinsed with clean water. Wax should be removed with a commercial wax stripper or by solvent cleaning. Grease should be cleaned by using an Oil & Grease Emulsifier. Rust must be removed by hand sanding vigorously or by conscientious power tool cleaning. Remove loose paint by scraping. Feather sand rough edges to ensure a smooth finish coat. Glossy surfaces must be dulled by lightly sanding. Remove sanding dust before paint application. Any exposed substrate should be spot primed with the appropriate primer.

NOTE: New concrete should cure 30 days prior to painting and should be thoroughly acid etched to a texture of medium sandpaper.

PRIMING:

  • Bare Concrete: Self Priming. Thin first coat of Tough Shield® with one pint of water per gallon.
  • Wood Floors: Use an acrylic primer or an alkyd primer/sealer
  • Masonry: Use Acrylic Masonry Sealer
  • Ferrous Metal: Use Metal Primer
  • Galvanized Metal: Self Priming

APPLICATION: Stir product with a circular, lifting motion before you begin to paint. Tough Shield® Porch & Floor Coating may be applied by brush, roller or spray techniques, at a rate of application not to exceed 500 square feet per gallon. On bare concrete, thin first coat with one pint of water per gallon. Surface texture and porosity will affect actual yield. Allow 24 hours cure time prior to light foot traffic and 5 – 7 days prior to heavy use. Apply when surface temperature is above 50 °F. This product is not designed as a slip resistant finish. If skid resistance is important, apply Insl-X® Sure Step Anti-Slip Coating.
